General description

PEDOT is a conjugated, electronically and ionically active polymer. Conjugated polymers offer charge transport between inorganic, electrically conducting metals and organic, proton-conducting biological systems. PEDOT is chemically stable on account of the diethoxy substituents that replace the defect causing extra hydrogen atoms. The electron donating nature of the pendant PEDOT oxygen atoms also improves the conductivity of the molecule.

Application

Conjugated polymers such as PEDOT can be potentially useful for wide variety of bionic devices including cochlear, retinal, and cortical implants, as well as pacemakers and glucose sensors.
