General description

Potassium tetraborate tetrahydrate is a hydrated tetraborate salt of potassium. Its crystal structure has been examined. Its crystals belong to the orthorhombic crystal system with space group P212121. Aqueous solution of potassium tetraborate tetrahydrate on evaporation affords single crystals.

Application

Potassium tetraborate tetrahydrate (K2B4O7.4H2O) may be employed in the preparation of puffed and dense forms of anhydrous potassium tetraborate (purity = 99.5%, bulk density = 0.4 and 0.7gcm-3). It may be used for the preparation of saturated K2B4O7 solution required for the quantification of polyamines in various biological samples by HPLC.
