General description

Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is a zwitterionic glycerophospholipid. PC constitutes the major phospholipid in the eukaryotic membrane. Among bacteria, only 10% has PC in their membrane.
The list of Phosphatidylcholine products offered by Avanti is designed to provide compounds having a variety of physical properties. Products available include short chain (C3-C8 are water soluble and hygroscopic), saturated, multi-unsaturated and mixed acid PC′s. All of the products are purified by HPLC, and special precautions are taken to protect the products for oxidization and hydrolysis.

Application

24:1 (Cis) PC is suitable for use as a phospholipid (PL) standard for lipid profiling of phosphatidylcholine by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS).
24:1 (Cis) PC has been used:
  • in the preparation of multivesicular liposomes (DepoFoam) formulation with protein or peptide drugs
  • in the formation of planar bilayer lipid membranes
  • for analyzing the phase transition of giant unilamellar dinervonoylphosphocholine (DNPC) vesicles by N-4-nitrobenz-2-oxa-1,3-diazol (NBD)-labelled fluorophore in confocal microscopy

Biochem/physiol Actions

24:1 (Cis) PC is a synthetic lipid.
Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is essential for the structure and functions of eukaryotic membranes. PC is essential for very low-density lipoprotein synthesis in liver cells. PC is the substrate for sphingomyelin. PC is the major source of cell signaling molecules. PC is the structural component of many human parasites and helps in cell invasion.
