General description

4′-Pentyl-4-biphenylcarbonitrile (5CB) is a nematic liquid crystal. 5CB undergoes phase transition from crystalline to nematic then to isotropic state at 18oC and 35oC respectively. It may be produced by modifying biphenyl.2

Application

Attaching 5CB to an aqueous-liquid crystal interface by redox active surfactant has been investigated.

We report a study of the interactions of proteins with monolayers of phospholipids (D/L-alpha-dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine and L-alpha-dilauroyl phosphatidylcholine) spontaneously assembled at an interface between an aqueous phase and a 20-microm-thick film of a nematic liquid crystal (4'-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl). It is generally thought that colloidal particles in a nematic liquid crystal do not generate the first multipole term called deformation elastic charge as it violates the mechanical equilibrium. Here, we demonstrate theoretically and experimentally that this is not the

This paper proposes and demonstrates a particle free method for flow field visualizations by analyzing liquid crystal polarizations. The proposed concept is implemented by imaging of liquid crystal flow under microfluidic environment using a crossed polarization microscopy configuration. Fringe patterns
