Esmolol hydrochloride (ESM) may be used as a standard in spectrophotometric and electrochemical method for the determination of ESM in biological samples and pharmaceutical formulations.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Esmolol hydrochloride (ESM) is a class II antiarrhythmic drug. It is used to decrease the force and rate of heart contractions during surgery. Overdose of ESM can lead to side effects such as bradycardia, cardiac arrest, hypoventilation, mood disorder, and coma.
Esmolol hydrochloride is a ultrashort-acting β1 adrenoceptor antagonist (β1 receptor occupancy = 84.7%).
