General description

Myo-inositol (stereoisomer of inositol), a water-soluble six-carbon ring compound, required for growth various of bacteria, fungi and yeasts. Inositol is also a precursor of various biofunctional compounds containing inositol phosphate and lipid. It is a component of membrane phospholipids, glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchors that bind glycoproteins to cell membranes, and inositol phosphate second messengers. Myo-inositol plays an important role in cell morphogenesis and cytogenesis, lipid synthesis, structure of cell membranes and cell growth. Various bacteria can grow on Myo-inositol as the sole carbon source.

Application

Myo-inositol is used as a carbon source for the cultivation of various of bacteria, fungi and yeasts in many industries such as food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics
