General description

Fluorescein sodium salt (uranine) is a xanthene dye, which finds applications as a fluorescent tracer and shows the best of fluorescence in the pH range 6 to 11. Uranine is also employed as a coloring additive in drugs and cosmetics. It is known to exhibit optical chemical sensing and fluorescent properties in biological staining procedures.

Application

Fluorescein sodium salt is used as an analytical standard in determining the formation of hydroxy radicals, by the ZnO-based photocatalysts under UV-filtered simulated sunlight using spectrofluorometry. It is also used as a calibration standard for the label-free measurements of metabolic events within cells in the living animals using fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM).
It may also be used as an analytical reference standard for the quantification of the analyte in the following:
  • Soil samples using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
  • Coffee samples using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and capillary electrophoresis (CZE).

Fluorescence molecular imaging with exogenous probes improves specificity for the detection of diseased tissues by targeting unambiguous molecular signatures. Additionally, increased diagnostic sensitivity is expected with the application of multiple molecular probes. We developed a real-time multispectral fluorescence-reflectance scanning fiber
