General description

A broad-spectrum glyclcycline class of antimicrobial agent that is active against both Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. Exhibits toxicity for human AML cells at all stages of development in both in vitro and in vivo models. Selectively kills leukemic stem and progenitor cells (LD50 ~10 µM) and reduces the repopulating ability of the primary AML cells while sparing normal hematopoietic cells. Its action on growth and viability of eukaryotic cells is shown to be due to its inhibitory effects on mitochondrial protein translation and respiratory complex activity.
