General description

Methyl Green is a basic dicationic dye and is composed of triphenylmethane. It is suitable for the detection of DNA and RNA. It acts as a photochromophore and used to activate gelatinous films. At a very high pH, methyl green forms an alkaline solution and gets converted to a colorless carbinol base. In the presence of hydroxide anion, methyl green produces crystal violet dye and ethanol.

Suitability

Suitable for use as a DNA stain.
