General description

In general, α-cellulose is produced from wood pulp by base catalyzed hydrolysis.[1] It is considered to be insoluble in 17.5% basic solution and possesses a greater molecular weight than cellulose.[2]

Application

α-Cellulose has been used:
  • As a component of nutrient-rich diet, to study how nutrition affects individual fitness and insecticide efficacy among German cockroaches.[3]
  • As a carbon source for Schizophyllum commune culture.[4]
  • To study the effect of cellulose on the content of minerals in the femur of rats.[5]
