General description
Manganese (IV) oxide is a low cost, low toxic and easy handling inorganic compound widely used as a mild oxidant in organic chemistry. It is mainly used for the selective oxidation of activated alcohols to form α, β-unsaturated aldehydes and ketones.
Application
Manganese (IV) oxide can be used as selective oxidizing agent:
- In conversion of allylic alcohols to α, β-ethylenic esters or amides.
- In oxidation of allylic alcohols to α,β-ethylenic aldehydes or ketones.
- In oxidation of propargylic alcohols, saturated alcohols and benzylic or heterocyclic alcohols.
- Manganese (IV) oxide can also be used:,In hydration of nitriles to amides.
