General description

Phosphatidylcholine (PC) has two fatty acid chains attached to a head group. Generally, PC has saturated fatty acid in the sn-1 position and unsaturated fatty acid in the sn-2 position. It has a quaternary ammonium group and a phosphate moiety in the head group, existing as a zwitterion in a wide range of pH.

Application

Liver PC is suitable for use:
  • as a standard for quantitation of tumor derived lipids by thin layer chromatography
  • in the preparation of liposomes to mimic mammalian membranes
  • in lipid vesicle preparation to study intravesicular transfer of α-tocopherol fluorescent derivative (NBD-Toc)

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phosphatidylcholine (PC) plays a key role in the synthesis of second messenger and signaling molecules like diacyl glycerol, lysophosphatidic acid, phosphatidic acid and arachidonic acid. Liver PC has a saturated to unsaturated fatty acid ratio of 0.91.
