Gene Information

human ... SESN2(83667)

General description

Sestrin 2 (SESN2), a highly conserved protein, is a member of a family of anti-aging proteins called the sestrins. Human SESN2 (hSESN2) contains three subdomains, such as SESN-A, SESN-B, and SESN-C. The SESN2 gene is mapped to human chromosome 1p35.3.

Application

Sestrin 2 human may be used to study its role on blood brain- barrier (BBB) stabilization after moderate and severe hypoxic- ischemic (HI) injuries in neonatal rats.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Sestrin 2 (SESN2) plays a vital role in modulating cellular stress response and oxidant defense. It plays a regulatory role in energy metabolism, cell fate, liver diseases, inflammation, and carcinogenesis. This novel anti-aging protein aids to maintain mitochondrial activities and enhance mitochondrial health. Since SESN2 is capable of protecting tissues from oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction caused by ischemia or reperfusion (I/R), it may be a promising therapeutic target in hepatic regeneration.

The tumor suppressor p53 is activated upon genotoxic and oxidative stress and in turn inhibits cell proliferation and growth through induction of specific target genes. Cell growth is positively regulated by mTOR, whose activity is inhibited by the TSC1:TSC2 complex.
