General description

Monoacylglycerols (MAGs) are glycerol esters. 7.7 MAG has a 14 carbon acyl chain and possess a bilayer thickness of 25.8 Å.
This new Lipid detergent may be used for crystallizing membrane proteins by using lipidic mesophases. This method has variously been referred to as the lipidic cubic phase or in meso method. The method has been shown to be quite versatile in that it has been used to solve X-ray crystallographic structures of prokaryotic and eukaryotic proteins, proteins that are monomeric, homo- and hetero-multimeric, chromophore-containing and chromophore-free, and alpha-helical and beta-barrel proteins.

Application

7.7 MAG may be used as a host lipid in MdfA (multidrug transporter protein)–YN1074 (Fab fragment) complex for crystallization by lipidic cubic phase (LCP) method.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Monoacylglycerols (MAGs) are used in food industry as emulsifiers. 7.7 MAG participates in meso crystallization of BtuB (vitamin B12 transporter), an outer membrane protein. It can also help in lysozyme crystal growth. 7.7 MAG also plays a key role in the growth of diffraction-quality crystals. MAGs holds high significance in pharmaceutical and food industry.
