General description

Cholesterol-d6 is a deuterium labelled cholesterol. Ring labelled D6-cholesterol forms D6-steroidal glycoalkaloids (SGA).
Cholesterol-d6 is the deuterated cholesterol with deuteration in ring.

Application

Cholesterol-d6 is suitable for its use as a synthetic lipid standard, for cholesterol determination.
Cholesterol-d6 is used as a standard to detect cholesterol concentration using chromatography technique. It is also used to measure the percentage of cholesterol absorption by intravenously administrating into experimental animals.
Cholesterol-d6 may be used as an internal standard in
  • electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (ESIMS/MS)
  • gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS)
  • for spiking lipid extracts from Drosophila for liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS)

Biochem/physiol Actions

Cholesterol-d6 rich liposomes are used in understanding the kinetics of reverse cholesterol transport in lymphatic and aorta. It is used in the generation of stratum corneum (SC) lipid model systems for deuteration based neutron diffraction studies. Use of Cholesterol-d6 as a diet supplement has enabled the understanding cholesterol metabolism in the blood brain barrier.
