右旋糖酐是一种无水葡萄糖聚合物。由约 95% 的 α-D-(166) 键组成。其余 (163) 连接可解释右旋糖酐的分支。分支长度的冲突数据表明平均分支长度小于 3 个葡萄糖单位。然而,其他方法表明存在超过 50 个葡萄糖单位的分支。已发现天然右旋糖酐分子量 (MW) 在 900 万 ~5 亿范围内。较低分子量的右旋糖酐将表现出略少的分支,并且分子量分布范围更窄。分子量大于 10,000 的右旋糖酐表现得好像它们是高度支链。随着分子量的增加,葡聚糖分子的对称性增强。分子量为 2,000 至 10,000 的葡聚糖,表现出可膨胀弹簧圈的属性。在分子量低于 2000 时,右旋糖酐更呈棒状。采用以下一种或多种方法测定右旋糖酐的分子量:小角激光光散射法、分子排阻色谱法、铜络合-蒽酮试剂比色法测定还原糖含量和粘度。
