苯乙酰基甘氨酸是酰基甘氨酸。酰基甘氨酸通常是脂肪酸的次要代谢产物。但是,某些先天性代谢错误会增加某些酰基甘氨酸的排泄。在某些情况下,体液中这些代谢物的测量可用于诊断与线粒体脂肪酸β-氧化有关的疾病。酰基甘氨酸是通过甘氨酸N-酰基转移酶(EC 2.3.1.13)的作用产生的,甘氨酸N-酰基转移酶是一种催化化学反应的酶: 酰基辅酶A+甘氨酸 ↔ 辅酶A+N-酰基甘氨酸。苯乙酰甘氨酸或PAG是苯乙酸的甘氨酸偶联物。苯乙酸可能是由于暴露于苯乙烯(塑料)或通过食用水果和蔬菜而产生的。苯乙酸用于某些香水中,具有低浓度的蜂蜜样气味,也用于青霉素G的生产。PAG是磷脂沉着症的推定生物标记物。在许多组织中表现出异常磷脂积累的动物中,尿中PAG升高,因此可用作磷脂沉着症的替代生物标记物。已证实犬、大鼠和小鼠尿液中存在苯乙酰甘氨酸。但是,这种化合物在人尿中的存在是有争议的。GC-MS研究尚未发现该化合物,而NMR研究声称已鉴定出该化合物,但似乎苯乙酰基甘氨酸有时可能通过NMR被误认为苯乙酰基谷氨酰胺。
