General description

L-Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in mammalian blood and tissues. It is vital for biochemical and cell culture research. It supports cell growth, metabolism, and protein synthesis. In cell culture, it ensures cell viability, proliferation, and antibody production. In biochemical studies, L-Glutamine aids in metabolic pathways, biomolecule synthesis, and cellular processes.

Application

L-Glutamine amino acid has been used:

  • as a component of the serum-free medium to culture mice cochlear organotypic cells.
  • as a supplement in Dulbecco′s modified Eagle′s medium-nutrient mixture F-12 (DMEM/F-12) medium for culturing mice seminiferous tubule segments.
  • as a supplement in Roswell Park Memorial Institute (RPMI) 1640 medium to culture human monocytic cell line.

Biochem/physiol Actions

L-Glutamine or Glutamine powder serves as a precursor for the synthesis of peptides, proteins, nucleotides, purine, pyrimidine, amino sugars, and nucleic acids. It plays an important role in promoting and maintaining cellular functions. Many cells and tissues like the intestine, kidneys, neurons in the central nervous system (CNS), liver, and pancreatic β-cells utilize glutamine at higher levels for their functioning. Glutamine regulates acid-base homeostasis and catabolic signaling. Glutamine plays a vital role in nitrogen transport and maintains the cellular redox state.Glutamine provides the necessary nitrogen, carbon and the reducing equivalents required for cell growth and division during cell culture. L-glutamic acid aids the incorporation of NH4+ into biomolecules.
L-Glutamine is an essential amino acid that is a crucial component of culture media that serves as a major energy source for cells in culture. L-Glutamine is very stable as a dry powder and as a frozen solution. In liquid media or stock solutions, however, L-glutamine degrades relatively rapidly. Optimal cell performance usually requires supplementation of the media with L-glutamine prior to use.
