General description

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), a linear polyether of ethylene glycol (ethane-1,2-diol), is soluble in water, benzene, ethanol, acetonitrile, and dichloromethane. However, it is insoluble in diethyl ether and hexane. This non-ionic polymer can exist in the monomer and aqueous phases.

Application

Poly(ethylene glycol) has been used:

  • in cryopreservation of cell-laden multi-assay platforms (MAPs)
  • as a macromolecular crowder to study its effects on fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-conjugated type-I collagen
  • as a model surfactant in surfactant formulations to evaluate the interfacial aggregation of antibody formulations in response to interfacial stress

Biochem/physiol Actions

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) is used in several applications including medicine. This polymer occurs as a preservative and is used in biomedical applications like drug delivery systems, biosensing, and tissue engineering. PEG is also used in cosmetic ointments and creams. It is used as a binding and dispersing agent in chemical and other industries.

We present a method for reproducible manufacture of multiassay platforms with tunable mechanical properties for muscle tissue strip analysis. The platforms result from stereolithographic 3D printing of low protein-binding poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogels. Contractile microtissues have previously been engineered

The pericellular matrix (PCM) surrounding chondrocytes is thought to play an important role in transmitting biochemical and biomechanical signals to the cells, which regulates many cellular functions including tissue homeostasis. To better understand chondrocytes interactions with their PCM, three-dimensional poly(ethylene

Previous studies have demonstrated that Separan AP-30, a drag-reducing polymer, significantly decreased the formation of atherosclerotic plaques in rabbits fed a high-cholesterol diet. Furthermore, Separan AP-273, a polymer similar to but longer than Separan AP-30, markedly increased cardiac output in
