General description

α-Terpinene belongs to the class of cyclic monoterpenes, the potential antimicrobial compounds identified in a variety of medicinal and aromatic plants. It is one of the main active constituents of tea tree oil (TTO). The antioxidant activity of tea tree essential oil is attributed to the presence of α-Terpinene at a concentration of 5-13%. α-Terpinenes can also be utilized as flavor enhancing agents in food industries and fragrances in cosmetics, and in household products, including detergents, soaps and air fresheners.

Application

α-Terpinene may be used as an analytical standard for the determination of the analyte in wines, Achillea tenuifolia essential oil and stressed plants by chromatography based techniques.

This study was undertaken to investigate the genotoxicity of beta-myrcene, alpha-terpinene and (+) and (-)-alpha-pinene, monoterpenes found in a variety of plant volatile oils. beta-myrcene, alpha-terpinene and alpha-pinene as well as plant oils containing these hydrocarbon monoterpenes have been used
