General description

Sphingosine-1-Phosphate (S1P) (d17:1) is a derivate of ceramide. It is a phosphorylated form of C17 analog of sphingosine. S1P is a zwitterionic sphingolipid. It is found in insects, yeasts and plants.

Application

Sphingosine-1-Phosphate (d17:1) has been used as an internal standard to quantify sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) in biological materials and tissue samples by mass spectrometry.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) contributes to cellular growth and function. It also aids in various physiological and cellular processes such as atherosclerosis, inflammation, immunity, tumorigenesis and cell proliferation. S1P acts as a signaling lipid in animal cells.

Sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) is a signalling sphingolipid affecting multiple cellular functions of vascular and immune systems. It circulates at submicromolar levels bound to HDL-associated apolipoprotein M (apoM) or to albumin. S1P in blood is mainly produced by platelets and erythrocytes

Liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry has evolved as the method of choice for the detection of sphingolipid metabolites due to its high sensitivity and superior specificity compared to other methodological approaches. Here, we describe a simple and robust

Apolipoprotein M (ApoM) transports sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) in plasma, and ApoM-deficient mice (Apom(-/-)) have ∼50% reduced plasma S1P levels. There are 5 known S1P receptors, and S1P induces adherens junction formation between endothelial cells through the S1P1 receptor, which in turn

Sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) is a vasoactive lipid mediator that is speculated to be involved in various aspects of atherosclerosis. About 70% of circulating plasma S1P is carried on HDL, and several pleiotropic properties of HDL have been ascribed to S1P.

The bioactive sphingolipid metabolite sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) is now recognized as a critical regulator of many physiological and pathophysiological processes, including cancer, atherosclerosis, diabetes and osteoporosis. S1P is produced in cells by two sphingosine kinase isoenzymes, SphK1 and SphK2. Many cells
