General description

Biotin (vitamin B7 or vitamin H) is a water-soluble B complex vitamin, which consists of an uredo ring fused by a tetrahydrothiophene ring. It is available in various foods, like whole grains, nuts, legumes, unpolished rice and egg yolk. Biotin is also produced by the normal gut flora.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Biotin is a vital cofactor for carboxylase enzymes in several metabolic pathways. It also functions as a coenzyme in the metabolism of fatty acids, isoleucine and valine. Biotin assists the transfer of carbon dioxide and also sustains a steady blood sugar level. Biotin is implicated in gluconeogenesis and citric acid cycle. It is involved in keratin synthesis and hence is used as a supplement for skin, hair and nail growth. Biotin is required for cell growth, production of fatty acids and the metabolism of fats and amino acids.

Hippocampal sharp waves are population discharges initiated by an unknown mechanism in pyramidal cell networks of CA3. Axo-axonic cells (AACs) regulate action potential generation through GABAergic synapses on the axon initial segment. We found that CA3 AACs in anesthetized rats
