Application

β-Glucanase is used to study cell wall modifications and for carbohydrate hydrolysis. It has been used to supplement barley-based diets for poultry and to study the reopening signal conduits and release of dormancy in the Populus species.

Biochem/physiol Actions

β-Glucanase is involved in cell wall modifications and carbohydrate hydrolysis.

Unit Definition

One unit will produce 1 μmole of reducing sugar (measured as glucose) from Beta-glucan per minute at pH 5.8 at 70 °C.

Physical form

Supplied as a solution in 50 mM Tris-HCl, pH 7.5, 100 mM NaCl, and 25% glycerol.

In yeast, enzymes with β-glucanase activity are thought to be necessary in morphogenetic events that require controlled hydrolysis of the cell wall. Comparison of the sequence of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae exo-β(1,3)-glucanase Exg1 with the Schizosaccharomyces pombe genome allowed the identification

To improve the nutritive value of barley-based diet for broilers, 2 experiments using 2 different barley lots were performed to evaluate the capacity of a mesophilic cellulase when fused to a β-glucan specific family 11 carbohydrate-binding module. The data revealed

In trees, production of intercellular signals and accessibility of signal conduits jointly govern dormancy cycling at the shoot apex. We identified 10 putative cell wall 1,3-β-glucanase genes (glucan hydrolase family 17 [GH17]) in Populus that could turn over 1,3-β-glucan (callose)
