General description

Sodium periodate is an inorganic salt commonly used as an oxidizing agent for various organic substrates and a co-oxidant in a few other oxidation reactions. The oxidation of sodium periodate takes place in a water medium, but an organic co-solvent is used for organic substrates that are insoluble in water.

Application

Sodium periodate can be used as an oxidizing agent:
  • In the selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides.
  • For the oxidative cleavage of a variety of 1,2-diols to generate aldehydes or ketones.
  • In the oxidation of diaryl, dialkyl, and aryl alkyl selenides to the respective selenoxides.
  • In the selective alkene epoxidation and alkane hydroxylation reactions.
  • In the selective oxidation of activated cellulose to obtain dialdehyde cellulose (DAC) by cleavage of the bond between C2 – C3 in the glucose unit.
  • It can also be used as an iodinating agent for the iodination of arenes and halo compounds.

Although chemokine and growth factor receptors are attractive and popular targets for cancer therapeutic intervention, structure-based targeting of the ligands themselves is generally not considered practical. New evidence indicates that a notable exception to this is macrophage migration inhibitory factor

Dextrin, a glucose polymer with low molecular weight, was used to develop a fully resorbable hydrogel, without using chemical initiators. Dextrin was first oxidized (oDex) with sodium periodate and then cross-linked with adipic acid dihidrazide, a nontoxic cross-linking molecule. Furthermore
