General description

L-Cysteine hydrochloride, commonly referred to as Cysteine HCl, is a vital component in biochemical research due to its versatile roles. Derived from the naturally occurring amino acid L-cysteine, this compound plays a crucial part in redox reactions, protein structure, cell culture, and antioxidant activity. Cysteine HCl functions as a reducing agent and a nucleophile in redox reactions. Additionally, it serves as a precursor to glutathione, a potent cellular antioxidant. Its significance extends to protein structure, where it contributes to the formation of disulfide bonds that stabilize protein structures. Cysteine HCl also supports cell growth and viability in cell culture applications. Its widespread applications encompass diverse areas of biochemical research, including redox biology, protein biochemistry, cell biology, and antioxidant investigations.

Application

L-Cysteine hydrochloride monohydrate has been used as a component of yeast dropout media for culturing yeasts. It has also been used as a component of differential reinforced clostridial broth (DRCM) for the isolation of clostridia.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Cysteine (Cys) is a sulfur-containing amino acid that modulates metabolism for growth, reproduction and immunity. It provides the disulfide linkage in proteins and in involved in the transport of sulfur. Cysteine is involved in the formation of hydrogen sulfide that functions as a signaling molecule. Cys residues are present at the catalytic sites of various enzymes.
NMDA glutamatergic receptor antagonist.
