General description

CD70 is an interesting membrane bound cellular factor that acts as a cytokine which binds the receptor CD27. Binding induces the proliferation and co-stimulation of T cells and enhances the generation of cytolytic T-cells. Thus, CD70 plays important roles in T cell adaptive T cell response as well as in innate immunity and is required for the proper activation of the anti-viral adaptive response. CD70 also serves as a regulatory role in early cytokine responses to pathogens through the maintenance of Treg cell survival and function. Recent research also indicates that CD70 expression could be important in autoimmune disease regulation and in treatment of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. CD70 is expressed on T cells, splenocytes, and thymocytes and it belongs to the TNF family of cellular signaling proteins.

Many hematopoietic cell types express CD1d and are capable of presenting glycolipid antigens to invariant natural killer T cells (iNKT cells). However, the question of which cells are the principal presenters of glycolipid antigens in vivo remains controversial, and it
