General description

24(S),25-epoxycholesterol is an oxysterol, which is produced by fibroblasts, macrophages and brain cells.
24(S),25-epoxycholesterol is a cholesterol-derived oxysterol, which is produced by fibroblasts, macrophages, and the brain cells. 24(S),25-epoxycholesterol is synthesized de novo in the mevalonate pathway.

Application

24(S),25-epoxycholesterol has been used as an oxysterol/internalstandard to study the effects of AY9944-induced changes in neurospheres.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Exogenous addition of 24(S),25-epoxycholesterol lowers 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-Coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase activity, represses sterol regulatory element-binding protein (SREBP) processing, and induces liver × receptor (LXR) -gene targets in vitro.
