General description

Ceramide is a N-acylsphingosine derived mainly from sphingomyelin (SM) or sphingosine (Sph) by acidic sphingomyelinase (ASMase) during sphingolipid (SPL) biosynthesis and degradation pathways. It is a mostly studied SPL mediator.

Application

16:0-d31 Ceramide is suitable for use as an internal standard for quantification of N-palmitoyl-D-erythro-sphingosine (C16-ceramide) levels by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC-MS).

Biochem/physiol Actions

Ceramide plays an important role in various processes including, cellular differentiation, apoptosis and cell signaling pathways.

Sphingolipid mediators such as ceramide are pleiotropic regulators of cellular growth, differentiation and apoptosis. We investigated the role of ceramide biosynthesis, metabolism and actions in term human cytotrophoblasts syncytialized over 7 days in culture. Intracellular C16 ceramide levels increased modestly
