General description

Bis(monoacylglycerol) phosphate (BMP) is a phospholipid containing two-phosphate linked fatty acid esterified glycerol molecule. It is present in late endosome, majorly in intraluminal vesicles (ILVs) and is hydrolyzed by BMP hydrolase. BMP accounts to 15% of total organelle lipids.

Application

18:1 BMP (S,S) may be used as an external standard for calibration in ultra performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) and as an internal standard in liquid chromatography - tandem mass spectrometer (LC-MS) for quantification of lipids from tissues. It may also be used in liposome preparation for dengue virus fusion studies.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Bis(monoacylglycerol)phosphate (BMP) plays a key role in cargo sorting and protein and lipid trafficking. The levels of BMP is elevated in lysosomal storage disorders (LSD) including Wolman disease, Niemann Pick disease and neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses. It is resistant to degradation by the enzyme, acid phospholipase.
