Gene Information

human ... VCAM1(7412)

General description

This gene is a member of the Ig superfamily and encodes a cell surface sialoglycoprotein expressed by cytokine-activated endothelium. This type I membrane protein mediates leukocyte-endothelial cell adhesion and signal transduction, and may play a role in the development of artherosclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Two alternatively spliced transcripts encoding different isoforms have been described for this gene. (provided by RefSeq)

Vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM1) is activated by transforming growth factor β-1 (TGF-β1) and is part of the immunoglobulin superfamily. The protein is expressed in blood vessels. VCAM1 possesses many extracellular immunoglobulin-like domains, a transmembrane region and a cytoplasmic domain. The VCAM1 gene is localized to human chromosome 1p21.2.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM1) plays a role in the adhesion of monocytes, lymphocytes, basophils and eosinophils to the vascular endothelium. It also functions in signal transduction and adhesion of leukocytes to endothelial cells. The protein has been associated with atherosclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. VCAM1 is upregulated in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. It has been linked to cancer progression and metastasis.
