General description

Yellow mercuric oxide shows antibacterial property and is commonly used in ophthalmic ointments.

Application

Yellow mercuric oxide in the presence of mercuric bromide catalyst may be used in the preparation of alkyl β-D-glucopyranoside tetra-O-acetates and tetra-O-benzoates from poly-O-acyl-α-D-glucopyranosyl bromides and different alcohols via Koenigs-Knorr syntheses.
