General description

Human serum albumin (HSA), a globular, soluble, and unglycosylated monomeric protein, is the most abundant protein in the plasma. It is a multidomain protein consisting of three homologous domains, named I, II, and III. Each of these domains contains subdomains A and B possessing common structural motifs. The HSA gene is present on the human chromosome location 4q13.3.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Human serum albumin (HSA) serves as a carrier protein for fatty acids, thyroid hormones, and steroids. It plays a critical role in stabilizing extracellular fluid volume. HSA acts as an excipient for vaccines and therapeutic protein drugs. It is also used as a cell culture medium supplement to produce vaccines and pharmaceuticals. HSA is used to treat hemodialysis, acute liver failure, chronic liver disease. HSA has importance in biological applications, such as ligand trapping, nano delivery of drugs, and fusion proteins.

Human serum albumin (HSA) is widely used in clinical and cell culture applications. Conventional production of HSA from human blood is limited by the availability of blood donation and the high risk of viral transmission from donors. Here, we report
