Application
Asialofetuin from fetal calf serum is suitable for use:
- in the assay of the lactose binding activity of the galectin-7 by immunodetection of in situ binding activity to asialofetuin immobilized on nitrocellulose
- in the inhibition of zona pellucida hardening of mouse oocytes
- as an acceptor in sialyltransferase enzyme activity assay
Incorporation of asialofetuin (AF) in liposomes strongly enhance delivery to and endocytosis by cells displaying the AF receptor, notably hepatocytes. This provides a very efficient route for gene therapy.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Asialofetuin (AF) binds to asialoglycoprotein receptor (ASGP-R) and is employed as a ligand for drug delivery to the hepatocytes. It aids serum-resistant lipoplexes for efficient gene deliver into the HepG2 (human hepatoblastoma) cells.
Feutins are glycoproteins that belong to the cystatin superfamily. They are characterized by the presence of two tandemly arranged cystatin-like domains and an unrelated domain. It binds to transforming growth factor (TGF)-β/BMP (bone morphogenic protein) cytokines.

In vitro gene delivery mediated by asialofetuin-appended cationic liposomes associated with gamma-cyclodextrin into hepatocytes
Journal of Drug Delivery, 2011 (2011)
The Journal of biological chemistry, 264(3), 1854-1859 (1989-01-25)
The hepatic acute phase response is accompanied by increased levels of Gal beta 1-4GlcNAc alpha 2,6-sialyltransferase activity in liver and in circulation. Previous studies suggested that cytokines and glucocorticoids mediate the induction of this sialyltransferase activity. In this study the

Bovine fetuin, the first fetal protein to be described, has recently been shown to be a species homologue of a well known human plasma protein--alpha 2HS glycoprotein (alpha 2HS). The fetuins are now known to be members of the cystatin
Augmentation of demineralized bone matrix (DBM) mineralization by a synthetic growth factor mimetic.
Journal of orthopaedic research : official publication of the Orthopaedic Research Society, 24(11), 2051-2058 (2006-08-22)
These studies evaluated whether F2A4-K-NS, a peptide mimetic of FGF-2, could augment ectopic bone production following the subcutaneous implant of human demineralized bone matrix (DBM). DBM was formulated into a gel with and without F2A4-K-NS, and injected subcutaneously into athymic
