General description

Lactosylceramide (LacCer) is a glycosphingolipid, which has a hydrophobic ceramide lipid and a hydrophilic sugar moiety. It is present mainly in the nervous system and myelin sheath.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Lactosylceramide (LacCer) is a structural and signaling lipid. It aids microbial attachment and also functions as an adhesion receptor for pathogens. LacCer is essential for signal transduction and cell adhesion. It controls cell proliferation and apoptosis. LacCer is implicated in cellular stress response and microbial pathogenesis. It facilitates innate immune responses and host-tissue pathogen interactions.
