General description

Recombinant, mouse α-interferon expressed in E. coli. Antiviral and anti-neoplastic agent. Suppresses bone marrow function and induces apoptotic cell death in non-melanoma skin cancer. IFN-α signaling is mediated by JAK1 and TYK2 tyrosine kinases. Note: 1 KU = 1000 units.
Recombinant, mouse α-interferon expressed in E. coli. Antiviral, antineoplastic agent. Expressed during the triggering stage of macrophage cytocidal activation. Suppresses bone marrow function and cell proliferation. Modulates the immune response. Also known to induce apoptotic cell death in non-melanoma skin cancer.

Unit Definition

One unit of interferon per ml of medium will cause a 50% inhibition of EMCV-induced cytopathic effect on mouse L929 cells. Units are determined with respect to the NIH international reference standard for mouse IFN-α.
