General description

d-erythro (2S, 3R) sphingomyelin (C24:0-SM) is a synthetic sphingomyelin with acyl chain comprising 24 carbon atom. It is produced by the acylation of D-erythro-sphingosylphosphorylcholine. Sphingomyelin is a key constituent of mammalian cell plasma membranes. It is mainly found at high concentrations in the myelin sheaths of nerve cells, in brain, eye lens and red blood cells. SM have asymmetric molecular structure and high hydrogen-bonding capacity.

Application

24:0 sphingomyelin (SM) is suitable to study its thermotropic and mechanical properties by using differential scanning calorimetry. It is also suitable for use as a lipid standard in ultrafast liquid chromatography−tandem mass spectrometry.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Sphingomyelin (SM) are involved in the formation of functional domains in the membrane bilayer. It also acts as a precursor for sphingolipid signaling molecules including, ceramides and other sphingolipid metabolites.
