General description

Balanced Salt solutions (BSS) are essential in cell culture as they serve as irrigating, transporting, and diluting agents to maintain the osmotic balance between intra-and extracellular spaces. They provide cells with water, inorganic ions, and energy for normal cell metabolism. BSS also provides a buffering system to maintain the medium within the optimum pH range (7.2-7.6).

Application

Hanks′ Balanced Salt has been used:

  • in the preparation of stock solution for culturing mice primary hepatocytes
  • to measure the mineralized nodule formation in human osteoblast cultures
  • in the preparation of embryo buffer to collect zebrafish eggs

Quantity

Formulated to contain 9.8 grams of powder per liter of medium.

Reconstitution

Supplement with 0.35 g/L sodium bicarbonate.

Other Notes

The pH is adjusted after addition of sodium bicarbonate.

Alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (α7nAChRs) are interesting not only because of their physiological effects, but because this receptor requires chaperones to traffic to cell surfaces (measured by alpha-bungarotoxin [αBGT] binding). Winged aphids are described as hosts of lesser quality for parasitoids because a part of their resources is used to produce wings and associated muscles during their development. Host lipid content is particularly important for parasitoid larvae as they lack
