General description
Balanced Salt solutions (BSS) are essential in cell culture as they serve as irrigating, transporting, and diluting agents to maintain the osmotic balance between intra-and extracellular spaces. They provide cells with water, inorganic ions, and energy for normal cell metabolism. BSS also provides a buffering system to maintain the medium within the optimum pH range (7.2-7.6).
Application
Hanks′ Balanced Salt has been used:
- in the preparation of stock solution for culturing mice primary hepatocytes
- to measure the mineralized nodule formation in human osteoblast cultures
- in the preparation of embryo buffer to collect zebrafish eggs
Quantity
Formulated to contain 9.8 grams of powder per liter of medium.
Reconstitution
Supplement with 0.35 g/L sodium bicarbonate.
Other Notes
The pH is adjusted after addition of sodium bicarbonate.

Winged aphids are described as hosts of lesser quality for parasitoids because a part of their resources is used to produce wings and associated muscles during their development. Host lipid content is particularly important for parasitoid larvae as they lack
