General description
Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) is a plasma protein produced in the bovine liver that has a globular, non-glycosylated α-helical structure. It consists of a single polypeptide chain with 583 amino acid residues and 17 cysteine residues that form the cross-linked disulfide bridges, stabilizing its structure. The BSA protein comprises three structurally distinct domains (I, II, and III), each of which contains two sub-domains (A and B) arranged in a heart-shaped architecture.
Application
Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) has been used
- as a component of phosphate buffer saline (PBS) solution for dissolving tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα), which was added as a supplement for culture media
- as a blocking agent to reduce non-specific binding during the albumin sensor assay
- as a blocking agent in the immunofluorescence (IF) assay
- as a protein standard in the Bradford assay

Preparation Note
La seroalbúmina puede denominarse también Fracción V. Esta convención de nomenclatura procede del método original de fraccionamiento de las proteínas séricas de Cohn en el que se utiliza precipitación en etanol frío. Utilizando dicho método, la seroalbúmina se encontró en la fracción quinta del etanol. Desde entonces, algunos han venido utilizando la expresión «Fracción V» para describir la albúmina sérica, al margen del método de preparación. Otros han utilizado este término para describir la seroalbúmina purificada por métodos de fraccionamiento en etanol que se han modificado mucho desde que se describió el método Cohn original. Sigma-Aldrich fabrica y distribuye seroalbúminas purificadas mediante una variedad de métodos primarios, entre ellos el verdadero método de fraccionamiento de Cohn, los métodos de fraccionamiento en etanol modificados, el fraccionamiento térmico y la cromatografía.
