General description

Phosphoglyceride (PG) are also referred as glycerophospholipid. It is an important component of membrane bilayers. It has three-carbon backbone of glycerol, two long-chain fatty acids, esterified to hydroxyl groups on carbons 1 and 2 of the glycerol and phosphoric acid esterified to the C3 hydroxyl group of glycerol. It is found at high levels in the membranes of all cells and at low levels in fat stores.

Application

14:0 PG is suitable for use:
  • in the preparation of lipid bicelles for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiment
  • as phospholipid (PL) standard to quantify phosphatidylglycerol (PG) by chromatography
  • for the preparation of DMPG (l-dimyristoylphosphatidylglycerol) phospholipid vesicles

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phosphoglycerides (PG)/glycerophospholipids play a key role in cell signaling systems. It also serves as an anchor for proteins in cell membranes.

The critical micelle concentration (CMC) can be approximately defined as the lipid monomer concentration at which appreciable amounts (>5% of total) of micellar aggregates first begin to appear in the equilibrium: nM1<=>Mn
