General description

Barium is a reactive, soft electropositive metal with a body-centered cubic crystal structure. It can be produced in a vacuum by reducing its oxide with aluminum. It has medium-specific weight and good electrical conductivity. It is widely used in alloying, removing unwanted gases from vacuum tubes, and as a reducing agent.

Application

Barium can be used as a precursor to synthesize Ba3Bi6.67Se13,Ba3Bi6PbSe13, and Ba3Bi6SnSe13.

It can be used as a dopant for Pb2+replacement in perovskite films. The addition of barium enhances the power conversion efficiency of organic-inorganic lead halide solar cells.
Critical for the synthesis of pure Ba21M2O5HX (M = Ge, SI, Ga, In, Tl) suboxide Zintl phases.3
