General description
The family of aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) includes 19 genes in human. It is localized to the nucleus, cytosol, mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum of the cell.
Application
Aldehyde dehydrogenase from baker′s yeast has been used to measure the activity of aldehyde dehydrogenase by Tottmar′s method to determine the change in nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) levels in serum sample. It has also been used in pyruvate decarboxylase assay.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) is one of the important enzymes involved in the non-P450 aldehyde reduction enzyme system. It protects the cell from the effects of toxic substances. Expression of ALDH is known to increase with the severity of lung cancer. ALDH reduces the extent of cardiac ischemia, arising due to myocardial infarction or post cardiac surgery. Mutation in this gene causes Sjogren‐Larsson syndrome is one such autosomal disorder.
Aldehyde dehydrogenase catalyzes the oxidation of aldehydes into carboxylic acids.
Packaging
Bottomless glass bottle. Contents are inside inserted fused cone.
Unit Definition
1 U corresponds to the amount of enzyme which oxidizes 1 μmol acetaldehyde (Cat. No. 00070) to acetic acid per minute at pH 8.0 and 25 °C.
