General description

Sodium tetrapropylborate (NaBPr4) belongs to the class of tetraalkylborates, which are commonly used as derivatization agents to accomplish the multielement speciation of organometallic compounds on account of their ability to react with elements such as mercury, lead and tin. NaBPr4 is preferred because it eliminates the need for organic solvents as required in Grignard reactions, also resulting in reduced analysis time.

Application

Sodium tetrapropylborate may be used as a derivatization agent to enhance the sensitivity of methylmercury in fish, organolead compounds in water and road dust samples and mercury species in sea water samples prior to their determination using microwave digestion with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), GC coupled to microwave-induced plasma atomic-emission spectrometry (MIP-AES) and GC with inductively coupled plasma (ICP) MS, respectively.
