Gene Information

human ... FOXA2(3170)

General description

Forkhead box A2 (FOXA2), also known as hepatocyte nuclear factor 3-β (HNF3-β), is encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 20p11.21. It is expressed in the liver, pancreas, intestine, and lungs. FOXA2 is a member of forkhead box (FOX) gene family and is characterized by a DNA binding “winged helix domain”.

Immunogen

Peptide with sequence C-GVYSRPIMNSS from the C Terminus of the protein sequence according to NP_068556.1; NP_710141.1.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Forkhead box A2 (FOXA2) or HNF3β is associated with embryonic formation of the primitive streak and endoderm. It also plays an important role in airway epithelial differentiation and is extensively expressed in type II pneumocytes. Decreased expression of FOXA2 is observed in lung cancer and non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). FOXA2 plays a vital role in normal pancreatic β-cell function and aberration in the expression of the gene leads to hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia. It also has an essential role in pancreatic α-cell differentiation. FOXA2 acts a regulator of the network of genes associated with intestinal epithelial cell function. Increased expression of FOXA2 in MKN-45 cells (human gastric cancer cell line) elevates E-cadherin expression and inhibits gastric cancer cell migration and invasion and therefore, FOXA2 is expressed at low levels in gastric adenocarcinoma tissues.
