General description
Allophycocyanin (APC) belongs to a family of phycobiliproteins and is well studied as a fluorescent reagent for flow cytometric analysis. It is isolated from a Spirulina species, a type of blue-green alga and is composed of α and β subunits. The heterodimers of these subunits can assemble as trimer or hexamer. APC displays high absorptivity and quantum efficiency. It has an excitation max at 651 nm and a emission max at 660 nm with extinction coefficient of 700,000 cm-1 M-1. It can absorb and emit light with low energy losses to quenching. APC can be easily conjugated to monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies for use in fluorescence-based detection methods, such as flow cytometry and FACS analysis. (Ref.: Sonani, RR., et al. (2015).
