General description

BSA is a single polypeptide chain consisting of about 583 amino acid residues and no carbohydrates. At pH 5-7, it contains 17 intra-chain disulfide bridges and one sulfhydryl group.

Application

  • Pharmacological assays; ion-binding, transport, or immunological studies
  • Fatty acid and lipid research
  • Stabilization of proteins and enzymes against proteolysis and denaturation

Biochem/physiol Actions

The fatty acids that are insoluble in circulating plasma are transported primarily by serum. The human serum albumin and bovine serum albumin share 76% sequence homology. Being the most abundant protein in the circulatory system, it participates in the maintenance of blood pH and carries several endogenous and exogenous compounds, including fatty acids, metal, amino acids, steroids and drugs.
