General description

Girard Reagents are N-substituted glycine hydrazides. They are classified as Girard-T (trimethylacetylhydrazide ammonium chloride), Girard-P (pyridinioacetohydrazide chloride) and Girard-D (N,N-dimethylglycine hydrazide hydrochloride). Girard hydrazones have a quaternary nitrogen moiety.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Girard reagents facilitate the isolation of carbonyl compounds from their complex mixtures, by generating water-soluble hydrazones. These reagents are sensitive and selective. Girard P reagent is used for the derivatization of oxosteroids to form the corresponding Girard hydrazones, which can be detected by tandem mass spectroscopy or electrospray (ES) mass spectrometry.
