General description

Boron trifluoride is a colourless gas and it reacts readily with water to form hydrates. It has been widely used as a catalyst during polymerizations, alkylations and condensation reactions. It is used as gas flux for internal soldering or brazing. It also finds application in being used as extinguisher for magnesium fires.

Application

It was used in transmethylation of 1,2-Diacylglycerol (DAG) containing fractions which were purified using HPLC. It may be used to treat lipids during GC analysis done for determination of fatty acid methyl esters and dimethylacetals.

Other Notes

Reagent for O-acetyl, methyl ester, methyl 2,2-dimethoxypropionate, dimethyl acetals and dimethoxy.
