General description

Peptide YY (PYY) is synthesized by L cells in the mucosa of the distal ileum, colon, and rectum. It is mainly expressed by peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Peptide YY is located on human chromosome 17q21.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Peptide YY (PYY) is involved in the modulation of gut motility, food intake and insulin secretion and is associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes. It may possess systemic and paracrine functions. NPY agonist with a preference for the Y1 and Y5 subtypes.

This investigation describes the relative potencies of four peptide agonists, namely, peptide YY (PYY), [Leu3l,Pro34]PYY (Pro34pYY), neuropeptide Y (NPY), and [Leu31,Pro34]NPY (Pro34NPY), as antisecretory agents in human, rat, and mouse gastrointestinal preparations. We previously reported that intracisternal (i.c.) injection of peptide YY (PYY) and low doses of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) or TRH analog, RX 77368, increased the resistance of the gastric mucosa to ethanol injury through vagal pathways in rats. The gastroprotective
