General description

Chemical structure: peptide

Biochem/physiol Actions

Inhibitor of human leukocyte elastase and proteinase 3, originally isolated from the skin of patients with psoriasis. May protect against certain autoimmune tissue damage. An elastase inhibitor which is an active fragment of elafin, as well as elafin itself, can also be found in bronchial carcinoma secretions.
Exhibits co-existent antimicrobial and antiproteolytic activities.1 Inhibits WAP-type four-disulfide core (WFDC) domain containing elastases. Antimicrobial spectrum: Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

High abundance proteins like protease inhibitors of plasma display a multitude of interactions in natural environments. Quantitative analysis of such interactions in vivo is essential to study diseases, but have not been forthcoming, as most methods cannot be directly applied

Elafin is an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory protein. We hypothesize that elafin expression correlates with diabetes. Among non-diabetic and prediabetic groups, men have significantly higher serum elafin levels than women. Men with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have significantly lower serum
