General description

Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is an inorganic, white solid compound, which is found as pellets, flakes, and granules. This highly caustic metallic base and alkali can readily absorb moisture and carbon dioxide in the air. NaOH is deliquescent and soluble in ethanol, water, and methanol.

Application

Sodium hydroxide solution has been used:
  • to prepare reagent A (0.1 M NaOH) for the pH inactivation of endogenous L-lactate by L-lactate dehydrogenase (L-LDH)
  • as a component of fresh alkaline melting solution for the denaturation of the antisense strand
  • to prepare Type-I collagen hydrogels for microfluidic device fabrication

Biochem/physiol Actions

Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is used in various industries, including textiles, drinking water, soaps, and detergents, pulp and paper manufacturing, and as a drain cleaner.
